This ones a real gem for the catalogue. I think Heaven and Hell did really well to reinforce the point that playing metal isnt about playing fast; its about the emotion of the music, the ambiance created, the sound of the guitar, and the power of the music. The songs themselves have moments of past brilliance scattered here and there but for the most part they're devoid of enjoyment, replaced instead with an abundance of fillery non-riffs that go nowhere. Seeking this one out is mandatory. Diversity is something else that impressed me about The Devil You Know. He didn't need to tone down his performance, but the rest of the band did, and so Dio's always immaculate voice rides dull melodies over boring, go-nowhere plod riffs. It sounds more in the vein of Dehumanizer, with more 'occult' style lyrics and staying away from rainbows and things of that nature. Around the time of thrash metal, that seems to have been lost to bands looking to push the boundaries of extremity in music, but it must be remembered that songs like Black Sabbath and Hand of Doom are just as, if not heavier, than songs like Paranoid and Electric Funeral. Each member steps up to the plate and delivers with all their balls.
Every song has another helping of tasty riffs and a gallon of solos, enough to not only overfill this album, but flood the market with so many riffs that from this album, thirty more knock off bands can each release a ten track full-length by the end of the year and still seem innovative. Songs like "Double The Pain", "Fear", "The Turn Of The Screw" and especially "Follow The Tears" are Dio's way of singing the 'blues', albeit with a fighting spirit. Dios own band has been rather stagnant for a while now (while still providing a terrific live show), while Iommis last solo outing with Glenn Hughes back in 2005 was diverting if entirely overrated. This is truly a massive tune where the whole band comes together to create something really special for the fans. All of which made Dios terminal cancer diagnosis, just months after The Devil You Knows release, all the more tragic, even as he battled his disease with his usual class and dignity until May 16, 2010, when it finally claimed him, out of the black and beyond the rainbow that passes for heavy metal Valhalla. Theres no doubt that Heaven & Hells The Devil You Know is a quality album, but given what was at stake, what was accomplished and the overall satisfaction amongst fans, Ill take Black Sabbaths 13 over Heaven & Hells The Devil You Know any day. When they released the single for this album, 'Bible Black', I already knew that the album was going to be great and that it would be an Album Of The Year candidate, and I wasn't wrong! Dio's vocals on this album are just some of the best and most aggressive sounding vocals he's ever put on an album. Geezer! Now, the worst part of this whole entire album is Vinny Appice. He is still very capable of writing some amazing riffs, and does so many times. To keep your personal information safe, we need to verify that it's really you.
